Steelers weighing Aaron Rodgers vs. the future: Could Jalen Milroe be the answer?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on a decision from Aaron Rodgers, who is reportedly choosing between Pittsburgh and the New York Giants now that the Minnesota Vikings have committed to J.J. McCarthy as their quarterback.

While the Steelers appear to be the frontrunners, Rodgers won’t be a long-term solution. The 41-year-old quarterback is rumored to be eyeing just two more seasons in the league, and Pittsburgh is reportedly offering him only a one-year contract.

With no clear successor on the roster, the Steelers will need to start thinking about their long-term quarterback plan—and the 2025 NFL Draft could be the answer.

Steelers could trade up for Alabama QB Jalen Milroe

According to a recent mock draft by Ben Rolfe (Pro Football Network), the Steelers might make a bold move to secure a future franchise QB. The proposed trade would have them sending multiple picks to the Dallas Cowboys to move up and select Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the second round.

Here’s the hypothetical trade package:

  • Steelers give up: Pick Nos. 83, 123, plus a second- and third-round pick in 2026

  • Steelers receive: Pick No. 44 (to draft Milroe)

Is Milroe worth the gamble?

Milroe is one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks in the 2025 draft class. He boasts a strong arm, elite athleticism, and dynamic playmaking ability. However, he’s also one of the most polarizing prospects. While some see massive upside, others believe he’s still too raw and needs serious development before he can succeed in the NFL.

According to The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez, Milroe has all the physical tools to be a modern NFL quarterback, but he needs time and the right coaching to reach his full potential.

If the Steelers sign Rodgers or another veteran, Milroe would have the opportunity to sit for a year, develop his game, and learn from an experienced quarterback—an ideal situation for a young, raw talent.

Would the Steelers make this move?

If Pittsburgh secures Rodgers, a trade for Milroe probably won’t happen. But if they miss out on Rodgers or see Milroe as the perfect long-term fit, they might be willing to pay the high price to trade up.

When it comes to finding a franchise quarterback, teams can’t afford to be hesitant. If the Steelers truly believe in Milroe, they shouldn’t hesitate to make a bold move to secure their future.
