The Ginger Island expansion introduced in Stardew Valley’s 1.5 update offers players a plethora of new content to explore and enjoy. Among the many features is the enigmatic Gourmand Frog, who resides in a cave on the island and tasks players with growing specific crops to relive the island’s glory days. However, deciphering the frog’s cryptic descriptions of these crops can be a challenge. Here’s a breakdown of what crops to grow to fulfill the Gourmand Frog’s requests.
Accessing the Frog’s Cave
Before players can interact with the Gourmand Frog and embark on his quests, they must first unlock Ginger Island West. This area is initially inaccessible and requires players to collect 10 Golden Walnuts to awaken a sleeping giant turtle blocking the path. Once the turtle is roused, players can access Ginger Island West and restore the farmhouse using 20 Golden Walnuts.
The Gourmand Frog’s Requests
- Ripe Melon: The Gourmand Frog’s first request is for a crop that is “round, pink, and juicy.” This description fits the ripe melon. Players can purchase melon seeds during the summer season and grow them on Ginger Island. Once the melon is fully grown, do not harvest it. Instead, show it to the Gourmand Frog in his cave to receive your reward.
- Golden Wheat: For the second request, the Gourmand Frog desires something “yellow and tickling” that “waves in the wind.” This description matches golden wheat. Players can acquire wheat seeds during the summer and fall seasons. Again, do not harvest the wheat once it has matured; instead, show it to the frog to claim your reward.
- Pungent Garlic: The Gourmand Frog’s final request is for “zesty ground fruit, that maketh the breath stink.” This description corresponds to pungent garlic. Garlic seeds can be purchased in spring (Year 2 onwards) and grown on Ginger Island. Show the fully grown garlic to the frog to complete the quest.
Growing the Crops
When growing the requested crops, players do not need to prioritize quality. The Gourmand Frog is equally pleased with crops of any quality, so there’s no need to use fertilizer. Additionally, all crops can grow on Ginger Island in any season, but players may need to wait to purchase the proper seeds from Pierre’s General Store.
Collecting Rewards
After showing each fully grown crop to the Gourmand Frog, players will be rewarded with 5 Golden Walnuts per completed quest. Completing all three crop requests will net players a total of 15 Golden Walnuts, which can be spent on various upgrades around Ginger Island.
By fulfilling the Gourmand Frog’s requests, players not only uncover the mysteries of Ginger Island but also reap valuable rewards to aid them in their farming endeavors.
