Star Wars fans, get ready — a brand new movie is on the way! The legendary sci-fi saga is set to continue with a fresh chapter titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and this time, none other than Ryan Gosling will be taking the lead role.
What’s even more exciting? The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who recently made waves with the upcoming Marvel blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Levy stepping into the Star Wars universe adds serious star power behind the camera as well.
The big news was officially announced at the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, where Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni shared the thrilling details. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, following the release of Mandalorian & Grogu in 2026.
According to a press release, Star Wars: Starfighter will be set about five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker (which came out in 2019). But don’t expect familiar faces or recycled plotlines — this movie is being described as an entirely new adventure that will introduce brand-new characters and take place in a completely unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline.
Making a surprise appearance at the event, Ryan Gosling — known for roles in Blade Runner 2049 and La La Land — said he was blown away by the passion in the room. “Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it,” he said, adding that the crowd reminded him just how much movies, especially Star Wars, mean to people.
Shawn Levy also chimed in, emphasizing that this film is neither a sequel nor a prequel. Instead, it’s going to break new ground and tell a completely standalone story, bringing fresh life into the galaxy far, far away.
With so much talent on board and a promise of something genuinely new, Star Wars: Starfighter looks set to take fans on another unforgettable ride through the stars.
