Even though Spaceballs got mixed reviews when it first came out in 1987, it slowly became a cult classic, meaning a lot of people grew to love it over time. And now, there’s exciting news for fans: a follow-up movie is officially happening!

The new film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, and the script is being written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Josh Gad, who’s known for his funny roles (like Olaf from Frozen), will also be starring in the movie.

This was first announced in June 2024, and now there’s even more good news: Mel Brooks, the genius behind the original movie, who co-wrote it, directed it, and acted in it, has confirmed that he’s coming back! He will once again play the hilarious character Yogurt, who was a spoof of Yoda from Star Wars.

The original Spaceballs was a parody, or funny version, of famous sci-fi movies like Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey. It became famous for its silly jokes, clever references, and Mel Brooks’s unique style of comedy.

Now, with a new cast and Mel Brooks returning, fans can get ready to laugh all over again, this time with a fresh, modern twist.

Mel Brooks has officially confirmed that he’s part of the upcoming Spaceballs sequel! He made the announcement on Thursday, June 12, by posting on X (formerly Twitter) with a simple but exciting caption:

“I told you we’d be back.”

The post includes a funny video that mimics the famous Star Wars opening scroll. It begins with:

“Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy…”

Then the video jokingly lists all the sequels, spin-offs, and reboots that have come out since, not just from Star Wars, but also from Dune, Alien, Harry Potter, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The scroll pokes fun at how much Hollywood has changed, joking that there are “36 MCU movies with two different Robert Downey Jrs.”

At the end of the video, Mel Brooks himself appears on screen, wearing a sweatshirt that says:

“SPACEBALLS THE SWEATSHIRT.”

He looks into the camera and says:

“After 40 years we asked what do the fans want… but instead, we’re making this movie.” A classic Mel Brooks joke, showing that the humor is still very much alive.

Meanwhile, Josh Gad, who is co-writing and starring in the sequel, shared his own post on Instagram. He said:

“I was that child who saw Spaceballs before I ever saw Star Wars and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic.”

He added that working with Mel Brooks and helping to make a sequel to the movie that shaped his childhood is “the greatest gift” of his life.

The original Spaceballs, released in 1987, starred a legendary cast:

  • John Candy as Barf

  • Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet

  • Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa

  • Bill Pullman as Lone Starr

As of now, fans are eagerly waiting to find out which original cast members might return and when the sequel will be released. So if you’re wondering about the cast, release date, and more exciting updates, keep reading, because there’s more news on the way!

Spaceballs 2 cast: Who’s coming back for the sequel?

As mentioned earlier, Mel Brooks is coming back to play his funny character Yogurt in the new Spaceballs movie. Josh Gad will be the main star of the sequel, but we still don’t know exactly what character he’ll be playing.

The rest of the cast has not been officially announced yet. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, some familiar faces from the first movie are expected to return!

  • Daphne Zuniga, who played Princess Vespa,

  • Bill Pullman, who played Lone Starr, and

  • Rick Moranis, who played the silly villain Dark Helmet,
are all set to come back for the sequel.

There’s also a new star joining the cast, Keke Palmer! She’ll be playing a new character, but we don’t know any details about her role just yet.

If everything goes as planned, Bill Pullman will play a new character called Starburst, who is the son of Lone Starr (his original character from the first movie).
Rick Moranis will once again wear the big helmet as Dark Helmet, and Zuniga will return as the royal and funny Princess Vespa.

So far, things are looking exciting for the new Spaceballs movie, both with returning stars and new ones joining in!

Spaceballs 2 plot details

Right now, we don’t know much about the story of the new Spaceballs movie; it’s still a secret.

In a press release, the movie company Amazon-MGM said that the title, plot details, and full cast list are all being kept under wraps, which means they are not ready to share them yet.

However, the movie has been described in a funny and confusing way by people (even some who haven’t seen the script yet). They’re calling it:

A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two… but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.

This silly description is totally in the spirit of Spaceballs and shows that the movie will probably joke about modern sequels, reboots, and all the confusing ways Hollywood brings old movies back.

To help fans remember, the original 1987 Spaceballs was a comedy that made fun of Star Wars and other sci-fi movies. The story followed the evil character Dark Helmet (played by Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (played by Mel Brooks), who tried to steal the air from a peaceful planet called Druidia.

But their silly and evil plan was stopped by the brave Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman), his half-dog, half-man best friend Barf (played by John Candy), and the strong and sassy Princess Vespa (played by Daphne Zuniga).

Now, many years later, the sequel is finally happening, but no one knows what the new story will be. So fans will have to wait and see, but with Mel Brooks involved, we can expect lots of laughs, spoofs, and surprises.
