Sophie Turner has landed a captivating role in the upcoming suspense drama Joan, where she plays a jewelry thief who rises to become known as the Godmother. Turner was drawn to the character because of her complex motherly instincts, stating that despite her ties to the underworld and a life of crime, the character’s fierce dedication to her child resonated with her.
In an interview with Variety, Turner shared her unique experience of auditioning for the role while heavily pregnant, only to receive a call confirming her casting the very day she gave birth. She noted, “I auditioned for it—because she is so different from anyone I’ve ever played,” emphasizing the character’s complexity and her departure from past roles.
Turner also recounted a memorable meeting with the real-life inspiration behind the character, Joan, just a week before filming began. She described Joan as “phenomenal” and a “force of nature,” highlighting the energy she brought to the room. Interestingly, Turner mentioned that their conversation didn’t delve into Joan’s life, as she had already developed her own interpretation of the character.
Additionally, when discussing her past role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, Turner expressed a willingness to return if the original cast and crew were involved. She mused about Sansa’s potential trajectory, pondering, “Would she still be queen in the North? Would she be a good ruler? Would there be some other kind of terrible war that’s happened? I’d love to see it.”
Joan is set to premiere on ITV on September 29, marking an exciting new chapter in Turner’s career.
