Sony has rolled out a series of new features for PlayStation 5 users in its latest system update, with a key highlight being the introduction of adaptive controller charging. This update brings several innovations aimed at improving the user experience, including enhancements to controller battery management, a customizable widget hub, and expanded social sharing features. The update is set to improve functionality across the latest PS5 models, including the PS5 Slim and the upcoming PS5 Pro, with features like adaptive charging only being available on these newer versions.
Adaptive charging, one of the main attractions of this update, is a system designed to monitor and automatically adjust the power supplied to DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, as well as PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers. It is also compatible with Sony’s Access adaptive controller kit. The system modifies the charging rate according to the connected controller’s battery levels, which helps prolong battery life and lower energy consumption. If a controller isn’t connected during rest mode, the USB port will automatically cut power shortly after, further conserving energy. However, this feature is restricted to the latest PS5 models.
Alongside adaptive charging, Sony has also launched a new “Welcome hub” for PS5 users. This customizable widget-based hub replaces the older Explore tab that was previously only available in the U.S. Users can now monitor various console metrics, including storage space, accessory battery levels, and even their friend list, all from the home screen. The Welcome hub will initially be available to a select group of users in the U.S., with plans for a wider global release in the coming weeks.
Other notable features from this system update include the ability to create personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earbuds, as well as enhancements to Remote Play settings, enabling users to manage access permissions more effectively. Sony is also expanding party voice chat functionalities, allowing players to share party invitations via messaging and social media apps. This new social feature will be accompanied by an update to the PlayStation App, enabling users to send party links directly from their mobile devices, further bridging communication between players.
