Sony has officially unveiled the highly anticipated PS5 Pro, marking a significant upgrade from the original PlayStation 5. Announced during a special technical presentation by Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5, the PS5 Pro promises substantial improvements in gaming performance and visuals.
Scheduled for release on November 7th, the PS5 Pro will be available for $699.99. It features a design that closely resembles the slim version of the PS5, as suggested by recent leaks. The new console has three distinct stripes down its side and notably, does not include a disc drive.
The PS5 Pro boasts a range of hardware enhancements aimed at delivering a superior gaming experience. The most significant upgrade is the inclusion of a larger GPU with 67 percent more compute units compared to the current PS5 model. This increase in GPU power, combined with 28 percent faster memory, results in 45 percent faster rendering performance, according to Cerny. This performance boost allows games to run with enhanced detail and improved frame rates.
Ray tracing capabilities have also been upgraded, with Sony indicating that developers will be able to cast rays at double, and sometimes triple, the speeds of the original PS5. This upgrade is anticipated to substantially enhance the visual fidelity of ray-traced games.
Alongside hardware enhancements, the PS5 Pro debuts Sony’s new AI-driven PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature. This AI-driven upscaling technique, akin to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, aims to enhance frame rates and image quality. The custom PSSR upscaling is designed to replace existing temporal anti-aliasing or upsampling methods in games, further enhancing the gaming experience.
Cerny highlighted that the PS5 Pro’s upgrades aim to address the common choice between performance and fidelity modes, stating, “Players are choosing performance about three quarters of the time.” With these advancements, Sony seeks to deliver a more balanced and immersive gaming experience, allowing players to enjoy high performance without compromising on visual quality.
