Shannen Doherty, widely recognized for her roles in shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Heathers, recently opened up about a significant influence in her life and career: her Little House on the Prairie co-star, Michael Landon.

During a recent episode of her podcast Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, Doherty reflected on her early career and the pivotal role Michael Landon played in shaping her as an actress. Doherty joined Little House on the Prairie at the age of 11, portraying Jenny Wilder in the show’s final season from 1982-83.

Describing her time on the show as “the best experience” of her career, Doherty credited Landon for instilling in her a passion for acting. She praised Landon as a mentor who taught her a great deal, emphasizing his impact on her professional and personal growth. Doherty shared, “I adored him. He was a mentor. He taught me so much.” Landon’s portrayal of Charles Ingalls, the family patriarch, left a lasting impression on Doherty, who fondly remembered his considerate and caring nature.

Despite experiencing some challenging and unenjoyable roles throughout her career, Doherty highlighted that her experience on Little House on the Prairie ignited her passion for acting. She attributed much of her career development to Landon’s mentorship, emphasizing his profound influence: “It was really the experience on Little House that spurred that passion for being an actor,” she said. Doherty also defended Landon’s character, stating, “I know the truth about that man, and he was just unbelievable.”

In addition to discussing her career, Doherty also addressed her ongoing health battle. According to PEOPLE magazine, Doherty has been fighting a severe form of breast cancer. Diagnosed in 2015, she initially responded well to treatments like surgery and medication. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and has progressed to stage 4, spreading to other parts of her body. Despite this, Doherty remains a resilient figure, continuing to share her journey with her fans and advocating for cancer awareness.

Shannen Doherty’s heartfelt reflections on Michael Landon highlight the significant role he played in her early career and personal development. His mentorship and support not only shaped her as an actress but also left an enduring impact on her life. As Doherty continues to battle cancer, she remains a testament to strength and resilience, inspiring many with her courage and dedication to her craft.
