After his role in The Apprentice, Sebastian Stan is stepping into a completely different and challenging new part in Justin Kurzel’s upcoming film Burning Rainbow Farm, which is set to premiere at Cannes.
Co-starring alongside The White Lotus’s Leo Woodall, Stan portrays one half of a real-life gay couple, Tom Crosslin and Rollie Rohm, who were known in the 1990s for their activism around cannabis legalization. The two men created Rainbow Farm in Michigan, a sort of utopian retreat where marijuana was accepted — a place that became famous as one of the most popular cannabis destinations in the world.
However, their lifestyle and activism soon clashed with local authorities. After their young son was arrested, tensions escalated and eventually led to a deadly police standoff in 2001, which many compared to the infamous Waco siege due to its intensity and tragic consequences.
Director Justin Kurzel described the film as a love story about two people who proudly defied hatred and refused to change who they were, daring anyone to take that away from them. He expressed excitement about bringing this courageous couple to life with Stan and Woodall, calling their story unforgettable.
The screenplay, written by Tommy Murphy, is based on Dean Kuipers’ 2006 nonfiction book Burning Rainbow Farm: How a Stoner Utopia Went Up in Smoke. The film’s international sales are being handled by Rocket Science, and CAA Media Finance is managing its North American distribution.
While fans await this powerful, emotional drama, they can still catch Sebastian Stan in action as the Winter Soldier in the recently released Marvel blockbuster Thunderbolts, which hit theaters worldwide last week.
