Sean “Diddy” Combs is heading into a tough day in court today, May 5, as his federal trial officially kicks off. The hip-hop mogul faces serious charges of sex trafficking and involvement with minors, and the evidence stacked against him looks heavy. Since the trial started on Monday, public opinion has largely leaned toward believing he’s guilty, which won’t make things any easier for his defense.
One big challenge for Diddy is that jurors never really come in “blank.” Everyone brings their own thoughts and feelings into the courtroom, so it’s unlikely the jury will be completely unbiased. The pre-trial media coverage and Diddy’s own public image could heavily influence how jurors see the case.
Adding more weight to the prosecution’s side is the fact that Cassie Ventura, Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, is expected to testify. She’s the first to accuse him of assault and rape during their decade-long relationship. Beyond Cassie, three other women are also set to give their accounts, all painting a troubling picture.
A key piece of evidence that’s gone viral is a video showing Diddy kicking and dragging Cassie through the hotel lobby where they stayed — a moment that could seriously sway the jury’s opinion. Reports also say that Cassie helped the NYPD conduct raids on Diddy’s homes in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.
On top of all this, race is reportedly going to be a topic the judge will address with the jury directly. Unlike in many trials where lawyers question jurors, here the judge will ask the questions himself — which could change the dynamic in the jury selection process.
All in all, Diddy faces an uphill battle as the trial unfolds.
