After more than a decade off the air, Scrubs is officially making its comeback—this time with a modern twist and a familiar cast that’s ready to scrub in once again. The reboot of the beloved medical sitcom has been greenlit by ABC, and original stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are all set to reprise their iconic roles as JD, Turk, and Elliot Reid.

The original Scrubs premiered in 2001 on NBC and later moved to ABC, where it wrapped its ninth and final season. Over the years, the show became a cult favorite, praised for its mix of absurdist humor, heartfelt moments, and emotional storytelling set against the backdrop of Sacred Heart Hospital.

Now, the series is returning with a fresh storyline that blends nostalgia with a more updated lens. According to the official logline, JD and Turk find themselves back in scrubs for the first time in a long while. While medicine, interns, and even the hospital may have evolved, the central bromance that defined the original show remains unshaken. New and familiar characters will find their way through Sacred Heart once again, bringing in laughs, heartwarming moments, and a few surprises.

While there was talk of a Scrubs reunion film, series creator Bill Lawrence ultimately scrapped the idea, joking, “I’m not going to do a movie. That sounds like a lot of work!” Instead, he has embraced the format that first made the show successful. Speaking to Variety, Lawrence said, “Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.”

In an interview with Independent, Lawrence also touched on some of the challenges of reviving a show after so many years—namely, the passage of time. “The hardest part is that Zach and Donald have aged,” he admitted with humor. “People still have that affinity, and love, for that goofy youthfulness. But if I saw two guys in their late 40s/50s doing ‘World’s Most Giant Doctor,’ and carrying each other around all the time, I would go, ‘What the f*** is going on,’ you know?”

Even with those changes, the spirit of Scrubs seems set to remain intact. While full casting details and an exact release date have yet to be confirmed, the show is expected to premiere within the next six to twelve months. Whether you’re an original fan or a newcomer, the reboot promises a blend of old-school charm and fresh perspectives that could easily reestablish Scrubs as a standout in today’s TV lineup.
