Scream 7 might still be a while away from hitting movie theatres, but the good news is, filming has already started, and we’re getting more exciting updates all the time.
This new chapter in the Scream franchise, which includes some of the most iconic horror movies ever, is bringing back a fan favourite: the original “final girl,” Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. She was the main character in the early films, so fans are pretty excited to see her return.
But here’s where things get kind of wild: a couple of characters who were thought to be dead are somehow coming back.
Yep, Matthew Lillard (who played Stu) and David Arquette (who played Dewey) are both set to return. Now, Stu’s comeback makes some sense, there’s always been speculation that he might have survived. But Dewey? That one’s a real head-scratcher, since his death felt pretty final. Still, Scream is known for twists, so maybe the new director, Kevin Williamson (who also wrote the very first Scream movie), has a few shockers up his sleeve.
If you’re a horror fan or just love a good slasher flick, this is one movie you’ll want to keep your eye on.
Down below, you’ll find all the key info: when Scream 7 is expected to come out, who’s in the cast, what we know about the story so far.
And whatever you do, don’t answer the phone.
Scream 7 release date: When will it release?
After a bunch of delays and behind-the-scenes problems, we finally have a release date for Scream 7: February 27, 2026.
Yep, it’s official. And honestly? It’s a big relief. This horror sequel has been in the works since August 2023, but it’s had a pretty bumpy road. The Hollywood actors’ strike (SAG-AFTRA) caused major delays, and there were also a lot of changes in the cast that made things even more uncertain.
To make matters worse, in December 2023, director Christopher Landon stepped down from the project. That left fans really worried, not just about the movie, but about the future of Ghostface (the masked killer) too.
But now, things seem to be back on track. The new director is Kevin Williamson, who actually wrote the very first Scream movie back in 1996. That’s a big deal, and it’s giving fans hope that this sequel will stick to the original feel of the franchise.
Filming is currently underway in Atlanta, and some leaked photos from the set have already started making the rounds online, which has only made fans even more excited to see what’s coming next for Ghostface.
Fingers crossed there are no more delays, and that the February 2026 date is the real deal!

Scream 7 plot details: What is going to scare us now?
We don’t have an official plot summary for Scream 7 yet, but thanks to some casting news, we have a good idea of what direction the movie might take, and it looks like it’ll be very different from what fans were expecting.
First off, two major stars, Melissa Barrera (who played Sam) and Jenna Ortega (who played Tara), are not returning for this movie. That’s a big deal because Scream 5 and Scream 6 had really focused on their characters. In fact, at the end of Scream 6, it kind of looked like Sam might be turning into a killer herself, following in the footsteps of her infamous father, Billy Loomis. Some fans even thought she could be the next Ghostface. But now that she’s gone? That storyline is probably done for good.
Instead, it seems like Scream 7 is taking a step back to its roots, bringing the spotlight back to the original final girl: Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. If you remember, she wasn’t in Scream 6, but now she’s back, and this time, she’s the main focus again.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Neve Campbell said the new film will centre around Sidney’s story, though she hasn’t read the full script yet. She hinted that it might have a vibe similar to the newer Halloween movies, where Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) came face-to-face with the monster who haunted her youth. Just like Laurie, Sidney has a long, painful history with Ghostface, and it looks like she’s not done fighting.
But here’s where it gets even more interesting: Ghostface has always been a different person each time, the mask hides whoever’s behind the killings. Now, with Matthew Lillard coming back as Stu Macher, we might finally find out what really happened to him. Even though the original director, Wes Craven, said Stu was dead, we never actually saw him die on screen. So now, it seems like he might be coming after Sidney once more, this time to finish what he started.
And he might not be alone. Scott Foley is also returning as Roman Bridger, the Ghostface from Scream 3. Could Stu and Roman be teaming up? If so, Sidney could be facing her most personal and terrifying fight yet.
There’s still a lot we don’t know, but one thing’s for sure: Scream 7 is going to shake things up.
