Ryan Lochte is facing a legal battle with his estranged wife, Kayla Reid, who has made serious claims about his behavior and substance use. The two have been in the midst of a divorce, and her recent allegations have put the Olympic swimmer back in the public eye. Reports also mention that Ryan previously failed a drug test.
According to court documents, Kayla accused Ryan of using drugs in front of their children. She claimed she found empty drug bags in various parts of their home, including the bathroom of their eight-year-old and the bed of their six-year-old. She also said Ryan often dozed off while driving and even fell asleep while taking care of the kids, raising concerns about his ability to parent safely.
Kayla went further, alleging that Ryan failed multiple drug tests, including hair follicle tests, and accused him of driving their children while under the influence. She said there were times she didn’t allow the kids to spend the night at his house because he refused to take a home drug test. She also linked his substance use to several car accidents.
Her lawyer asked the court to award full custody of the children to Kayla, arguing that Ryan’s repeated irresponsible behavior makes him unfit to share parental responsibilities. The lawyer emphasized that giving him custody would be harmful to the children.
Ryan Lochte has denied all of Kayla’s accusations. In a statement to US Weekly, he said the claims are completely false. He admitted that after a car accident in 2023 he experienced depression, which led to substance use, but insisted that he has never used drugs in front of his children or driven them while intoxicated. He maintains that his interactions with the kids have always been safe.
