Russia has launched its biggest air assault on Ukraine since the war began, unleashing 539 drones and 11 missiles, with the capital city Kyiv as the main target. This historic strike came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to The Washington Post, the skies over Kyiv were filled with smoke and explosions as Ukraine’s air defence systems scrambled to respond. The scale and speed of the attack shattered records, even surpassing another massive strike just days earlier.
“Kyiv was the main direction of the strike,” Ukraine’s air force confirmed.
This marks Russia’s second record-breaking strike in one week, signalling a clear and dangerous escalation in the war. Sunday’s previous high was 537 drones and missiles — now surpassed by this latest wave.
While the details of the Trump-Putin conversation remain unclear, the immediate aftermath shows no signs of diplomatic progress. In fact, the timing of the attack has fueled criticism of Trump’s approach to foreign policy. One social media user wrote:
“Diplomacy doesn’t work with Putin… he’s shown it over and over.”
Emergency responders in Ukraine are now assessing the extensive damage across Kyiv, as fears grow that even larger attacks could be ahead. The strike shows that urban centers remain Russia’s key targets, with civilian areas under increasing threat.
This sudden surge in violence raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of the current U.S. and NATO strategy and whether Trump’s administration is prepared for the growing scale of this conflict.
