Social media rumors about a serial killer in Austin, Texas, have resurfaced following the discovery of three bodies in Houston’s Buffalo Bayou this week. These claims have sparked comparisons to the so-called “Lady Bird Lake killer,” who was linked to a series of deaths in Austin over the past few years.
Authorities have dismissed the new rumors, saying there is no evidence to suggest a serial killer is active in either city. Texas residents were reminded of similar fears that emerged when at least 19 bodies were found in Lady Bird Lake between 2022 and 2025. Some posts on social media suggested the killer may have moved from Austin to Houston, citing a spike in bodies found in Buffalo Bayou this year.
One viral post noted that 12 bodies were discovered in Buffalo Bayou in 2025 alone, with a total of 34 found in Houston-area bayous this year. The post questioned whether the Austin “Lady Bird Lake killer” had relocated, fueling speculation online. Videos shared by journalists also highlighted the Buffalo Bayou deaths, adding to public concern.
The Lady Bird Lake cases involved bodies of mostly males discovered in and around the lake, part of the Colorado River, which flows beside Austin’s nightlife district, Rainey Street. The rumor of a “Rainey Street Ripper” arose because of the lake’s proximity to the busy entertainment area.
Police in Austin have stressed that only one of the Lady Bird Lake cases was confirmed as a homicide. Many of the deaths had unknown causes, and some, like the case of a 17-year-old boy in June 2025, were linked to accidental drowning. Authorities said he had been kayaking without a life jacket and did not resurface. Another case involved a paddleboarder spotting a deceased individual floating in the lake.
While the social media buzz has reignited fears, police continue to insist there is no serial killer on the loose. Officials urge the public to separate rumors from verified information as investigations into individual cases continue.
