Roku has officially launched its next-generation Ultra streaming set-top box, retaining the familiar design and price tag of $99 (approximately £75 or AU$145) but boasting significant internal upgrades. The device, primarily designed to sit discreetly behind or alongside a TV, offers substantial performance improvements, aiming to enhance users’ streaming experience.
The new Roku Ultra is powered by a quad-core processor, developed specifically for “cinematic streaming.” This processor promises a 30% performance boost over other devices in Roku’s lineup, ensuring faster app load times and smoother operation on the Roku OS platform. The processor upgrade allows for broader format compatibility, making the Roku Ultra the first device in its lineup to support all major HDR formats, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, in addition to 4K streaming and Dolby Atmos support. These features are expected to provide superior visual quality, especially when paired with high-end TVs.
The Roku Ultra retains the HDMI 2.1 port and includes Quick Media Switching to prevent slowdowns when switching refresh rates. It also features Wi-Fi 6, ensuring faster streaming speeds when connected to compatible routers. Moreover, Roku uses machine learning and AI to predict what users may want to watch next, reducing the time it takes to start streaming content.
For the first time, the Roku Ultra supports Bluetooth headphone connectivity, levelling the playing field with Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer. Users can now enjoy private listening sessions with ease.
Included in the box is the second-edition Voice Remote Pro, which now comes with backlit buttons for easy use in low-light conditions. The remote also features a Quick Launch button for instant access to favorite streaming services, and a Live TV button providing access to over 400 free channels. The most notable upgrade to the Voice Remote Pro is its USB-C charging port, replacing the need for batteries. Additionally, a built-in speaker helps locate the remote when misplaced.
The new Roku Ultra is available for pre-order in the United States and Canada, with shipments beginning in the coming weeks. It’s expected to roll out to other retailers soon, and Roku has hinted at further international availability.
Roku also teased several upcoming software enhancements tied to Roku OS 14, arriving in the coming months. Users can expect expanded voice control features and a focus on family-friendly content. The Roku app for iOS and Android is also being upgraded, giving users the ability to control their TV and search for content from the same screen.
