Roku is looking to enhance its Ultra streaming set-top box with a new generation that promises to be even better while maintaining its familiar design. The updated Roku Ultra keeps the same sleek, rounded square shape and classic black color, complete with a subtle purple tag displaying the Roku logo. It retains its price point of $99 (around £75 / AU$145), making it accessible for streaming enthusiasts.

The external appearance of the Ultra doesn’t stray far from its predecessor, which means it can easily blend into your entertainment setup, whether it’s sitting next to your TV or tucked away behind it. The real improvements, however, lie beneath the surface, focusing on speed and performance.

The Fastest Roku Yet

The 2024 Roku Ultra is powered by a new quad-core processor designed specifically for “cinematic streaming,” which Roku claims is 30% faster than any other device in its lineup. This boost in speed is expected to make the Roku OS run more smoothly and allow apps to open more quickly. Additionally, this model supports a wide array of formats, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, making it the first Roku device to accommodate all major HDR formats, along with 4K and Dolby Atmos support. When paired with a compatible TV, your streamed content should look stunning.

Like its 2020 counterpart, the new Ultra still features an HDMI 2.1 port and supports Quick Media Switching, which helps minimize delays when the refresh rate changes. Inside, it comes equipped with Wi-Fi 6, enabling faster streaming, provided you have the right router. Roku has also incorporated machine learning and AI to anticipate your viewing preferences, queuing up the app or show you’re likely to want next for quicker access.

If you prefer a more private listening experience, the Roku Ultra now allows you to connect Bluetooth headphones, bringing it in line with competitors like the Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer. This long-awaited feature is a significant upgrade for those who enjoy streaming without disturbing others.
