Robert Downey Jr. is officially back on the set of Avengers: Doomsday—but this time, not as Iron Man. The actor is returning to the Marvel universe in a surprise twist: he’s playing Doctor Doom.

He recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram, sitting outside his trailer and flexing while holding Jeremy Renner’s memoir, My Next Breath. The trailer behind him had a poster of comic book Doctor Doom and a sign that read, “Do not knock. Trust yourself.”

In the caption, Downey wrote:

“Reading Renner’s book and feeling stronger already… What a journey to wisdom… very instructive… a must read!”

Renner Responds with Gratitude

Jeremy Renner, who played Hawkeye in the Avengers movies, commented on the post:

“Long way from the ICU… At least we know how this story ends my brother. Love you.”

He was referring to his near-fatal snowplow accident in January 2023, which left him in critical condition. Renner’s book talks about his recovery and emotional journey after the accident.

Renner Says No to Hawkeye Season 2

Although Renner remains a fan favorite, his future in the MCU is uncertain. He recently revealed that he declined an offer to return for Hawkeye Season 2—because the pay was cut in half.

On the High Performance podcast, Renner explained:

“They offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘It’ll take twice the work for half the pay and eight months of my life.’”

He hinted that the reduced offer might have been because of his accident—saying he felt like they saw him as “only half the Jeremy” he used to be. He also clarified that it wasn’t Marvel or Disney making the decision, but likely studio accountants. A Disney insider later denied his claims, though didn’t give further details.
