Marvel fans have something big to look forward to, and the excitement just got even more real. With filming underway for Avengers: Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. gave fans a sneak peek behind the scenes—and it’s sending the internet into a frenzy. The actor, who was the original face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shared a fun post on Instagram on May 2, 2025, showing off some of the cast members from the highly-anticipated superhero ensemble.
In the post, Downey Jr. dropped a series of photos, starting with a group shot where he’s dressed in all black, surrounded by other actors from the MCU. He’s right in the center, fist raised, clearly in high spirits. Fans immediately spotted some familiar faces in the mix—Chris Hemsworth, his longtime Marvel buddy from the Avengers: Endgame days, and Channing Tatum, who made waves recently as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Also joining the group were Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), and several new faces making their Marvel debut: Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, Winston Duke, and Anthony Mackie. The vibe was casual, celebratory, and full of Marvel energy.
Downey Jr. captioned the post with: “Just wow!!! Dinner and a show with the Old Avengers. So cool, fresh, and deep. Big congrats. #thunderbolts” — hinting that they’d gathered to watch Marvel’s latest release, Thunderbolts, which can be seen playing in the background of the final image in the carousel.
What’s even more thrilling is the news that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU—not as Iron Man, the hero we all know and love—but in a brand-new villainous role. He’ll be taking on the iconic Marvel baddie Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday.
Set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, this next chapter is shaping up to be one of the most epic Avengers films yet. Fans are already buzzing with theories and excitement over the new lineup, returning legends, and Downey’s jaw-dropping transformation from hero to villain.
