Rina Sawayama is officially returning as Akira in Caine, the upcoming John Wick spinoff led by Donnie Yen. Akira, the fierce daughter of Shimazu Koji (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), first appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to her intense fight scenes and strong screen presence.

She’ll be back in action in Caine, which will be directed by Donnie Yen himself. The movie is being produced by longtime franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, along with Chad Stahelski, who’s also co-producing through his company, 87Eleven Entertainment.

Yen isn’t just starring in and directing the movie — he’s also serving as an executive producer. Production is expected to start later this year, and Lionsgate is set to launch international sales for the film at the Cannes Film Festival, according to Variety.

Chad Stahelski praised Sawayama, saying, “Rina is such a badass. I love what she did with this role in Chapter 4 and can’t wait to see her cross paths with Caine once again.” Yen also said he’s excited to bring her back for what he calls an “exciting” new adventure, and hinted that Akira’s role might get an even bigger upgrade this time around.

The story of Caine will take place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. The full plot hasn’t been revealed yet, but the spinoff—written by Mattson Tomlin—will expand the John Wick universe even further by diving into characters like Akira.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson added, “We’re beyond thrilled to have Rina coming back to the franchise. Caine and Akira have unfinished business.” It’s clear the creators are ready to dig deeper into Akira’s story, and fans have a lot to look forward to.
