Suits was a hugely popular show loved by fans around the world. When news broke that some original characters, like Harvey Specter and Louis Litt, would return in the spin-off Suits LA, fans were really excited.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter—which happened before Suits LA got canceled—Rick Hoffman, who played Louis Litt, opened up about how hard it was to say goodbye to his iconic role.

When asked how the show’s creator, Aaron Korsh, pitched Hoffman’s guest spot on the spin-off, and whether they had talked about bringing back his character before Suits LA was developed, Hoffman explained that back in 2019, as Suits was wrapping up, he and Korsh often discussed working together again. They tossed around different ideas during the pandemic, but those ideas weren’t necessarily about Suits or Louis Litt—they were more general.

Hoffman said, “It’s hard to say goodbye to a character like that. Playing Louis was life-changing for me, and Suits was Aaron’s baby. Naturally, you think, ‘What if?’ but nothing concrete was ever planned.”

He went on to say that when the writers’ strike happened, he was actually the last person to find out about the Suits LA revival—not because he’s “antisocial,” but because he wasn’t really checking if people were still watching Suits years after it ended.

Then, out of the blue, Hoffman started getting calls from old high school friends he hadn’t heard from in ages. Meanwhile, his daily conversations with Korsh suddenly stopped, and he wasn’t sure why.

Later, he saw the official Suits LA announcement “out of nowhere” in entertainment news. He described the whole experience as like stepping into an “alternate universe” and said he was really excited, thinking, “You gotta be kidding me!”

Although Hoffman didn’t know what the future held, he was surprised when Korsh reached out early in Suits LA’s first season. He guessed Korsh was probably thinking about which original characters would fit well in the new show.

When Hoffman got that call, he was naturally thrilled and eager to say yes. He said they’d always talked about working together again on something “Louis-y,” but never knew how. This spin-off gave them the perfect reason to reconnect and bring that character back to life.
