Back in January 2021, the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions made a deal that felt very unusual. You almost never see two teams swap their starting quarterbacks straight up. But that is exactly what happened. The Rams sent Jared Goff to Detroit and the Lions sent Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. At the time it felt surprising. Now, more than four years later, the way it has turned out is really interesting.
The trade itself was simple on the surface. The Rams got Stafford. The Lions got Goff along with three valuable draft picks. These picks later helped the Lions bring in Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams and even a few solid defensive players after some extra moves. Those players have become a big part of Detroit’s growth.
The reason behind the deal was also clear. Detroit wanted to rebuild from scratch. Trading Stafford, who was a long time star for them, gave the team a chance to collect important draft picks and start fresh. Losing a player like Stafford was tough, but it opened the door for change.
Over time Goff became a stronger and more confident quarterback in Detroit. So the trade worked out well on their side. They not only improved at quarterback but also picked up young talent that shaped their new team. On the other hand, Stafford helped the Rams win a Super Bowl in his very first season with them. That achievement alone makes the trade worthwhile for Los Angeles.
In the end both sides got what they needed. The Lions got a new future. The Rams got a championship.
