Cillian Murphy’s return as Tommy Shelby for the Peaky Blinders movie has been confirmed by series creator Steven Knight. The movie is set to start shooting in September, with filming taking place in Digbeth.

In the last series of the show, Tommy Shelby was seen killing his own nephew and fulfilling Aunt Polly’s prophecy. Diagnosed with a brain tumor, Tommy sets off to die but discovers it was a ruse by his political ally. The series ends with him riding off with no strings attached, presenting himself as a new man.

Steven Knight has hinted at the plans for the film, stating that he knows exactly what it’s about and what two stories it will tell. However, he leaves the unfolding of the story open-ended, wanting it to depend on the film itself. The movie will reportedly be set a few years after the last series, placing Tommy and the Peaky Blinders in the midst of the Second World War.

Cillian Murphy has expressed his openness to revisiting the character of Tommy Shelby, stating that it has to be the right opportunity. He has previously mentioned his willingness to return if there’s more story to tell, indicating his enthusiasm for exploring further narrative avenues within the Peaky Blinders universe.
