Based on a True Story, the dark comedy series starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, has officially been canceled by Peacock after just two seasons. The second season, which premiered in November 2024, will now be the show’s last.

Blending true crime and comedy, the show followed a financially struggling couple who, in a bid to turn their luck around, started a true crime podcast. Their central theory? That their seemingly normal plumber might actually be a serial killer. The cast also featured Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The series was created by Craig Rosenberg, with Annie Weisman stepping in as the showrunner for Season 2. Both Cuoco and Messina also served as executive producers.

Despite receiving positive reviews and building a loyal fanbase, the show didn’t get picked up for a third season. The second season expanded on the couple’s chaotic descent into the dangerous world of amateur crime solving, continuing to walk a tightrope between suspense and humor.

While fans might be disappointed by the abrupt ending, Peacock still has other notable titles in its lineup, including Long Bright River and the second season of Poker Face. The platform remains focused on delivering new and engaging content, even as Based on a True Story ends its brief run.
