The show has been renewed, and actor Patrick Gibson is all set to return as the young version of the famously twisted character, Dexter Morgan. If you’re not familiar, this series acts as a prequel to the original Dexter show, which had a huge run from 2006 to 2013 and built a massive fanbase.
“Original Sin” gives us a peek into the early years of Dexter’s life — basically how a seemingly normal guy turned into a cold, calculated serial killer. Gibson steps into the shoes of a young Dexter, a role that was originally played by Michael C. Hall in the main series. And fun twist? Even though Hall isn’t acting in this version of Dexter’s youth, he’s still involved — he narrates Dexter’s inner thoughts and helps produce the show behind the scenes.
Set in 1990s Miami, the show follows teenage Dexter as he begins to realize he’s… different. He struggles with violent urges and a dark side that won’t go away. But instead of letting it take over him completely, he learns to control it — thanks to his adoptive dad Harry, who teaches him “the Code.” This code is basically a creepy moral compass: only kill the people who truly deserve it — criminals, abusers, and the like. So while Dexter does become a killer, he sees himself as a twisted kind of vigilante.
At the same time, Dexter is trying to live a “normal” life. He’s doing a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department, learning all about crime scenes — skills that’ll come in handy for, well, obvious reasons.
The show’s in great hands too. Clyde Phillips, who ran the original series, is back as the showrunner. And Michael C. Hall is also helping out as an executive producer, along with a strong team that includes Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Michael Lehmann, best known for directing Heathers, is directing the series and also producing.
But wait — there’s more Dexter on the way!
Paramount clearly believes the Dexter franchise still has a lot of life in it. Alongside Original Sin, they’re also working on “Dexter: New Blood”, a sequel that picks up after the original show ended. And according to Variety, another follow-up called “Dexter: Resurrection” is in the works too — and this one will bring Michael C. Hall back on screen as the main man himself.
