Florida Panthers player Matthew Tkachuk isn’t afraid to say what he thinks. After winning his second Stanley Cup in a row, he made it clear: the Panthers won because they worked together as a team, not because of one superstar.
In an interview on Tuesday night, Tkachuk said, “Heart meets talent. Our team was a team. When things got tough for the other side, they looked to just one guy. But we stuck together and did everything as a group. That’s why we’re holding the Stanley Cup, because we played like a team.”
He was talking about the Edmonton Oilers, especially their captain, Connor McDavid. McDavid is known as one of the best hockey players in the world and had some good stats during the series (1 goal and 6 assists). But Florida’s defence made it hard for him to do much.
The Panthers used their top defenders, Aaron Ekblad and Gustav Forsling, to shut McDavid down. Ekblad made life difficult for the Oilers’ offence, and Forsling showed he’s becoming one of the NHL’s best defensive players.
Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky also played great, stopping almost everything. He had a strong save percentage and only allowed a few goals per game, with both of his losses happening in overtime.
Even though Tkachuk was injured, dealing with a torn muscle and hernia, he still gave it his all, scoring 3 goals and getting 4 assists while making big plays on the ice.
Florida’s strength came from its depth. While the Oilers had the two biggest stars (McDavid and Leon Draisaitl), the Panthers had strong players all across their lineup. Their third line, with Eetu Luostarinen, Anton Lundell, and Brad Marchand, played especially well.
In playoff hockey, stars are important, but full-team effort matters more. And Florida had it, every step of the way.
