OpenAI is getting ready to launch its next big AI model, GPT-5, possibly as soon as August, according to a report from The Verge. This would mark an important moment in the development of artificial intelligence, especially for tools that generate human-like text, answer questions, and help with complex tasks.
Earlier this year, people noticed signs that GPT-5 was in progress. There were server upgrades and internal testing happening at both OpenAI and Microsoft, one of its major partners. At first, some expected GPT-5 to launch in May, but the timeline has now shifted slightly. Still, it looks like the company is now in the final stages of preparing the model for release.
CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed that GPT-5 is real and almost ready. He mentioned it in a podcast with comedian Theo Von, where he shared a personal story. Altman had faced a question he couldn’t answer himself, so he tried asking GPT-5, and the model gave a perfect response. He admitted the answer was so good, it made him feel “useless” next to the AI.
One big difference with this release is that OpenAI will also introduce smaller versions of GPT-5, called “mini” and “nano” models. These will be made for developers and businesses that want powerful AI tools, but don’t need the full-sized model or want something more affordable or faster. It’s a smart move to help more people use the technology, depending on their needs.
Unlike earlier versions like GPT-4o or o3, GPT-5 is expected to combine many advanced features into one system. This includes better understanding of images, text, and possibly sound (known as multimodal AI), as well as long-term memory and smarter reasoning abilities. Altman has described it as a more unified version of OpenAI’s best tools, making things simpler and more powerful at the same time.
As the launch date gets closer, people in the tech world, especially developers and investors, are watching closely. GPT-5 could help make AI tools easier to use and even more helpful in everyday life, while also competing with other big players in the AI space, like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.
