OpenAI is introducing age prediction on ChatGPT globally. The tool estimates whether an account belongs to a minor. This is part of preparations for a future adult mode that will allow mature content on the chatbot.
When ChatGPT thinks an account is under 18, it applies extra protections. These protections limit exposure to sensitive content. If a user is mistakenly flagged as a minor, they can regain full access by verifying their age through Persona, OpenAI’s identity verification service. In the European Union, this feature will be available in the coming weeks.
Adult mode coming in 2026
OpenAI plans to launch adult mode in the first quarter of 2026. The feature will be available only to users who verify their age. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that mature content will be allowed once age verification is confirmed. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s applications chief, confirmed this timeline in December.
ChatGPT growth and revenue
ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly active users. OpenAI recently started showing ads to some U.S. users to boost revenue. Microsoft-backed OpenAI reported annualized revenue of over $20 billion in 2025, up from $6 billion in 2024. Growth is closely tied to an increase in computing capacity.
The rollout of age prediction and upcoming adult mode shows OpenAI is preparing for more personalized and controlled user experiences while expanding monetization.
