OpenAI has announced a strategic partnership with Common Sense Media to develop an initiative focused on educating teenagers on the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration aims to create AI guidelines and educational materials tailored for children, educators, and parents, ensuring that teens can effectively incorporate AI into their learning experiences.
Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making technology safe and accessible for children, has been actively working on an AI ratings and review system. The system is designed to provide insights for parents, children, and educators, addressing questions related to the risks and benefits of AI use among youth.
The partnership will also involve the curation of “family-friendly” large language models (LLMs) branded under OpenAI’s GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). The goal is to align these models with Common Sense’s rating and standards, ensuring that the AI technologies adhere to safety and ethical considerations.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of making AI tools available safely and responsibly to teenagers and those integrating AI into their educational journeys. Altman envisions a future where personalized AI is accessible to every teen or adult.
While specific details about how LLMs will be modified for educational purposes were not disclosed, Altman suggested that customized models could be beneficial for teens interested in subjects like science or biology.
Jim Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media, highlighted the intention to develop educational materials that will inform families and educators about the safe and responsible use of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot powered by GPT technology.
The collaboration comes amid increasing efforts to address AI literacy among younger generations and underscores OpenAI’s commitment to providing helpful AI resources for free. The initiative aligns with Common Sense Media’s mission to assess the impact of AI on learning experiences and ensure ethical and responsible AI use.
OpenAI and Common Sense did not specify how LLMs would be adjusted, but Altman acknowledged the importance of closely monitoring AI use, especially in the context of potential misuse such as deepfakes that could emerge during elections. He emphasized OpenAI’s proactive approach to addressing challenges associated with AI and maintaining a robust response effort to mitigate risks.
