OpenAI launched GPT-5-Codex on Monday. It is a special version of GPT-5 made for coding. It is built to help with software engineering and can handle coding tasks better than before.
This model is good at quick coding sessions and can also manage long, complicated tasks on its own. It can review code and spot serious bugs before the software is released.
GPT-5-Codex is available on all Codex platforms. It is now the default choice for cloud tasks and code review. Developers can also use it for local tasks through Codex CLI and the IDE extension.
OpenAI has been improving Codex steadily. Codex CLI came out in April and Codex web in May. Two weeks ago, OpenAI combined all Codex tools into one system. Now, users can move between local setups and the cloud without losing their work.
Codex works in many places. You can use it in terminals, IDEs, web browsers, GitHub, and even the ChatGPT iOS app. It comes with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans.
OpenAI says these changes bring them closer to building a coding assistant that understands what you need, works well with teams, and can handle tasks reliably.
