Oliver Stone’s 1991 film “JFK” stirred immense controversy upon its release, presenting an alternative theory to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, challenging the official narrative of a lone gunman. The film was a labor of passion for Stone, who faced significant hurdles in getting it funded and made, with many big stars initially hesitant to become involved.
Enter Kevin Costner, whose agreement to star in the film proved instrumental in its production. Portraying the controversial District Attorney of New Orleans, Jim Garrison, Costner took on a challenging and daunting role. Garrison, though largely discredited at the time, brought forth the only public prosecution related to the assassination, charging Clay Shaw, played by Tommy Lee Jones, who was ultimately found not guilty.
Shaw’s trial, depicted in the film, marked the first public showing of the Zapruder film and provided Garrison with a platform to challenge the findings of the Warren Commission Report. Stone’s “JFK” played a significant role in fueling various conspiracy theories surrounding Kennedy’s assassination, contributing to ongoing public intrigue and debate.
Speaking at a screening of the film in 2023, Stone emphasized the pivotal role Costner played in bringing the project to fruition. Despite initial apprehension from other stars, Costner’s commitment to the challenging role proved invaluable. Stone highlighted the risk involved in portraying such a controversial figure and praised Costner’s courage and dedication to the role.
Costner, already a major Hollywood star at the time, had a string of successful films leading up to “JFK,” including “The Untouchables,” “Bull Durham,” and “Field of Dreams.” His involvement in the film further solidified his stature in the industry, and he continued to explore themes related to Kennedy in subsequent projects, notably in “Thirteen Days,” where he portrayed JFK’s Chief of Staff during the Cuban missile crisis.
Costner’s willingness to tackle complex roles and engage with significant historical events not only cemented his status as a leading actor but also contributed to the enduring legacy of films like “JFK,” which continue to spark discussion and debate among audiences.
