The abrupt resignation over the weekend of Lisa Zornberg, the mayor’s top legal counsel, marked a dramatic upheaval in the administration of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Her resignation represents the most recent in a string of difficulties and controversies that have plagued the mayor’s office in the midst of many ongoing federal investigations.
Zornberg, who has been an important legal advisor to Adams and his team for more than a year, submitted her resignation in a succinct statement, citing her incapacity to carry out her duties. “Serving the City has been a great privilege. I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer perform my duties as a member of the team, hence I am submitting my resignation with effect from today. In her letter of resignation, Zornberg said, “I wish you nothing but the best.”
This event follows increased attention being paid to the mayor’s close circle. Edward Caban, the recently retired police commissioner, was among the high-ranking city officials whose phones were recently taken by federal agents. Caban explained his decision to resign by pointing to the “distraction” the probes had generated. Other well-known members of Adams’ administration, such as the director of the public school system, a senior deputy mayor, and important public safety consultants, also had their gadgets taken.
Although the specifics of the federal investigations are yet unknown, it is certain that they have caused a tumultuous atmosphere at City Hall. Adams has insisted that he was not aware of any wrongdoing despite the probes.
After Zornberg resigned, Mayor Adams thanked her for her services, saying, “We are grateful for all of Lisa’s hard work over the past 13 months for the city and our administration.” We don’t expect someone to stay in these professions forever since they are difficult. We hope Lisa finds success in all of her future pursuits.
An interim replacement for Zornberg is expected to be announced soon as the administration continues to navigate the ongoing challenges.
