Netflix is dropping a new comedy movie called Nonnas worldwide on May 9, 2025. It’s directed by Stephen Chbosky, who made Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Vince Vaughn stars in his first Netflix Original film, and Susan Sarandon plays an important role too.

The story is inspired by a real restaurant called Enoteca Maria in Staten Island, where grandmothers from different cultures cook traditional dishes. Netflix bought the movie rights last September for over $20 million.

Nonnas will be available to stream only on Netflix starting May 9. The movie is just under two hours long and is rated TV-14 for some language, suggestive content, and mature themes.

Vince Vaughn plays Joe Scaravella, who opens an Italian restaurant run by grandmothers after his mother passes away. Susan Sarandon’s character plays a big role in the emotional and community side of the story. The cast also includes big names like Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Linda Cardellini, and Joe Manganiello.

The movie is produced by Rachel Shane, Gigi Pritzker, and Jack Turner, with executive producers including Vince Vaughn himself.

At its heart, Nonnas is about grief, healing, and how food and family traditions can bring people together. Joe finds new meaning in life by starting a restaurant where grandmothers share their family recipes, inspired by the true story of the Staten Island eatery.

Although the story is set in Staten Island, filming happened mostly in New Jersey, in places like Paterson, Jersey City, and Hoboken during May and June 2023. The script was written by Liz Maccie, known for the show Siren.
