Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko has once again found himself in the spotlight, this time for his strong defence of polygamy. His comments have caused a major stir online, with many people criticising him for promoting the practice.
The 64-year-old lawmaker made headlines earlier in October 2025 after reports surfaced that his sixth wife, actress Regina Daniels, accused him of physically assaulting her. Ned denied the claims and said that Regina’s behaviour was caused by substance use, describing her as violent and destructive. He alleged that she attacked his staff and damaged property at their home “for no reason.”
As the controversy grew, an old 2020 BBC interview resurfaced where Ned had spoken openly about his belief in polygamy. In that interview, he said he fully supported the idea of having multiple wives and saw nothing wrong with it. He explained that he came from a polygamous family, loved children, and even hinted that he might marry another wife one day.
The debate reignited after Ned appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on October 27, 2025. When asked how he manages his large family, Ned repeated his belief that polygamy brings stability and balance to a man’s life. Comparing it to standing on one leg versus several, he said that having multiple wives offers “more balance.” He went on to say that men who have only one wife are “standing on one leg,” adding that he felt sorry for them.
Ned further explained that he has no regrets about his marriages and would make the same choices again. He said he respects and loves all his wives and children, insisting that his family life is built on harmony, not conflict.
His comments came shortly after Regina reportedly moved into a new home. In an interview with a local newspaper, she claimed her husband wanted her to enter rehabilitation, but she chose to live separately instead. Ned, however, said he remains in control of the situation and described himself as “an Old Testament man.”
The senator’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria and social media, with some defending his right to his beliefs and others calling his statements outdated and insensitive. For now, both Ned and Regina seem to be taking time apart as the situation continues to unfold.
