Netflix is working on a brand new mobile app design. The update is expected to roll out later this year. The goal is simple. Keep people watching longer and compete better with social platforms.

Netflix co CEO Greg Peters shared this during a recent earnings call. He said the new interface is meant to support Netflix’s growth for the next decade. He did not share many details. But the direction is becoming clear.

Netflix is already testing a vertical video feed inside its mobile app. This looks very similar to TikTok or YouTube Shorts. Short clips are easier to scroll. They grab attention faster. Netflix clearly wants a share of that daily screen time.

The company is also expanding into video podcasts. Cloud gaming is another big focus. With all these new formats, the current app layout may feel outdated. A redesign would give these features more visibility.

Peters said the new interface will act as a base. Netflix plans to keep testing and improving it over time. This means users should expect constant changes and experiments.

The redesign was discussed after a question about vertical video. That is a strong hint. Netflix sees platforms like YouTube and TikTok as real competition now. Not just other streaming apps.

Netflix has already redesigned its TV app recently. It added a large recommendation banner on the home screen. The goal was to make choosing something to watch easier. Some users liked it. Some did not. But Netflix clearly is not afraid to change things.

Gaming also plays a big role in this update. Peters confirmed that cloud based TV gaming is a major priority. Netflix is still early in this rollout. About one third of users already have access to TV based games.

Right now, phones and tablets can be used as controllers through the Netflix app. A redesigned mobile interface could make this feature easier to find and use.

Redesigning a popular app is risky. Many companies have faced backlash for it. But the streaming market is crowded. Attention spans are shorter. Netflix cannot afford to stand still.

This mobile redesign could be Netflix’s biggest shift yet. Not just a streaming app anymore. But a platform fighting for every minute of your screen time.
