Streaming services such as Netflix are kind of like picky shoppers

In 2025, there are lots of new shows and movies to watch on streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. It’s a great time for entertainment lovers, new stuff keeps coming out almost every week!

While new content is arriving, some shows are also getting cancelled, and it’s happening a lot these days. Just because a show is good doesn’t mean it’s safe; shows often get cancelled quickly, sometimes before they even get a real chance to get popular or tell their full story.

Netflix alone has already cancelled six big shows since the beginning of 2025. Even though they’re getting ready to release some of their biggest shows and movies later this year, they’re also cutting back and cancelling stuff at the same time. It’s just part of how streaming works now, always making space for what they think will bring in the most views.

So, while fans get excited about new content, they also have to deal with the disappointment of seeing their favourite shows disappear too soon.

1. Territory

Territory was a show that only had one season, but it definitely made an impact. The story focused on the Lawson family, who own the biggest cattle farm in the world, located deep in the Australian outback. Things get messy when the head of the family, Colin, says he doesn’t know who should take over the business after him. This sparks a huge power struggle, with family members turning against each other. But it’s not just a family drama, Indigenous leaders, rival groups, and even big mining companies get involved, and everyone’s fighting for control.

The first season was a big hit, it even made it into Netflix’s Top 10 list in several countries. Because of that, fans and the people behind the show were excited and ready to start filming Season 2. The season ended with a major cliffhanger, leaving the story wide open and making viewers even more eager for the next chapter.

But then came the disappointing news: Season 2 isn’t happening. According to rumours, the reason had more to do with timing issues and Netflix’s tight scheduling, rather than anything wrong with the show itself. No deep explanation was given, but it seems like it just didn’t fit into Netflix’s current plans.

Netflix did release a statement (shared by C21 Media) where they thanked the cast and crew for their amazing work on Territory and said they’d love to work with them again in the future, just maybe on a different project.

2. The Recruit

The Recruit starred Noah Centineo (you might also know him from Black Adam) and followed the story of a young lawyer who just started working at the CIA after graduating from Georgetown Law. Everything seems exciting and new until things take a wild turn.

Early on in his job, he meets a dangerous Eastern European spy who’s in prison. She threatens to spill very sensitive government secrets unless she’s released. Suddenly, this rookie lawyer is thrown into a chaotic mix of international politics, secret missions, and serious danger. What started as a desk job turns into a life-threatening spy adventure.

The show was full of action, drama, and twists, and fans really enjoyed the wild ride. Unfortunately, in March, Netflix officially announced that The Recruit was cancelled after just two seasons. Many fans, and even the show’s creator Alexi Hawley, were hoping for a third season to continue the story, but Netflix didn’t share any specific reason for pulling the plug.

3. Kaala Paani

Kaala Paani first landed on Netflix in October 2023 with just seven episodes, but it made a strong impression. Created by Sameer Saxena and written by Biswapati Sarkar, the show told the gripping story of a mysterious disease spreading across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As the infection worsened, the race to find a cure became more intense, turning into a deep, emotional journey about survival, humanity, and connection.

The show was praised for its storytelling and unique setting, and fans were thrilled when Netflix renewed it for a second season. The plan was set: pre-production in May, filming in August, everything seemed good to go.

But then, something strange happened. Netflix suddenly cancelled the show, even after renewing it. No official reason was given. Just silence. Fans were left confused because why would a popular show with a clear next step be scrapped out of nowhere?

This kind of sudden cancellation is pretty rare, especially for a series that had already been greenlit to continue. For now, Kaala Paani’s future is completely up in the air, and its fans are left wondering what could’ve come next in the chilling story set in the islands.

4. The Lady’s Companion

The Lady’s Companion is a Spanish-language comedy-drama that had just one season with eight episodes, which came out at the end of March. The story followed Elena Bianda, a smart and watchful woman who was hired as a chaperone by Don Pedro Mencía. Her job? To look after his three unmarried daughters and make sure they behaved properly, a setup that led to lots of drama, humour, and touching moments.

The show became really popular after its release, and fans were hoping for more. Behind the scenes, the creators were even brainstorming ideas for Season 2, ready to continue the story.

But eventually, Netflix decided not to bring it back for another season. No explanation was given, and fans were left feeling disappointed and confused, especially since the show had done so well.

5. Surviving Summer

Surviving Summer was a fun, sun-soaked show starring Sky Katz, Kai Lewins, and Lilliana Bowrey. The story follows Summer Torres, a rebellious American teen from Brooklyn, New York, who gets kicked out of her high school and is sent to Australia. There, she discovers the world of competitive surfing, makes new friends, and even falls in love with one of the local surf boys.

The show first came out in June 2022, and fans were excited when Season 2 dropped in September 2023. But unfortunately, that’s where the wave ended. In December 2024, one of the stars, Lilliana Bowrey, casually confirmed in a TikTok comment that there won’t be a Season 3. When a fan asked about it, she simply replied, “There isn’t one!”

So, even when the show had a good run and a solid fan base, it looks like Summer’s surfing journey is officially over, and there is officially no more seasons ahead.

In 2025, four well-known French actors, Antoine Gouy, Vincent Heneine, Guillaume Labbé, and Manu Payet, came together to star in a French series called Shafted. The show had just six episodes and told the story of four middle-aged friends trying to figure out their messy lives in modern-day Paris. From dealing with love and relationships to facing work problems and personal growth, the show explored it all in a real and sometimes funny way.

Shafted did pretty well in France, where people connected with the relatable characters and their stories. But sadly, the series didn’t catch on with audiences in other countries. Because of this, Netflix chose not to continue it, deciding to cancel the show after just one season.

Even though one of the stars, Guillaume Labbé, said he really wanted to continue the story in future episodes, Netflix didn’t move forward. So for now, the journey of these four friends in Paris has come to an end.
