Michelle Rodriguez, known for her roles in various blockbuster franchises, including Resident Evil, Machete, and the Fast and Furious series, discussed her characters’ tendency to come back to life, contrasting her experiences with those of actor Sean Bean.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Rodriguez revealed that she has returned to portray previously-deceased characters in multiple films, including the horror movie Resident Evil, the action film Machete, and the Fast and Furious franchise. Her characters manage to make comebacks, defying the fate of death.
Addressing her involvement in Avatar 2, Rodriguez recounted a conversation with director James Cameron about the possibility of her character returning in the sequel. Cameron suggested the idea of bringing her character back, to which Rodriguez responded, “You can’t do that—I died as a martyr. Jim, I came back in Resident Evil, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back in Machete, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back with Letty, I wasn’t supposed to. We can’t do a fourth, that would be overkill!”
Rodriguez humorously mentioned that she feels her characters keep coming back because the filmmakers may not know what to do with a female character who doesn’t have a boyfriend. She playfully remarked, “I don’t understand, it’s so weird. I guess they don’t know what to do with the girl who doesn’t have a boyfriend. ‘She doesn’t have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive, or kill her?’”
Her comments shed light on the recurring theme of her characters defying death in various films and the humorous perspective she brings to the phenomenon.
