Michael Bolton has opened up for the first time about his tough battle with glioblastoma, a fast-growing and aggressive brain cancer he was diagnosed with in December 2023.

The 72-year-old legendary singer-songwriter — who’s won two Grammys over his impressive 50-year career — shared with People magazine that doctors were able to remove the entire tumor during surgery last December. But his fight wasn’t over yet: in January 2024, he had to go back under the knife due to an infection. He finished his chemotherapy and radiation treatments by October 2024, and since then, he’s been getting MRI scans every two months to check if the cancer has returned. Thankfully, his most recent scan came back clear.

In a heartfelt interview, Bolton reflected on the emotional and mental challenges he’s faced through this journey. “You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,” he said. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”

He also credited the support of his family — especially his daughters Holly (47), Isa (49), and Taryn (45) — for helping him stay strong. Knowing he wasn’t alone made a huge difference in keeping his spirits up.

Bolton first shared the news of his diagnosis with fans on Instagram in January 2024, announcing he’d be taking a break from touring to focus on treatment and recovery. He’s currently resting at his home in Connecticut, surrounded by loved ones.

While the cancer has affected his short-term memory, speech, and mobility, Bolton says he’s chosen not to focus on any prognosis. Instead, he’s holding onto hope and resilience. “I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side,” he said, emphasizing his determination to live for more time with his family.

Michael Bolton’s courage and positive spirit during this difficult time serve as a powerful reminder of strength in the face of adversity.
