Mewgenics has officially become the most played roguelike on Steam. The game crossed 115000 concurrent players shortly after launch. That number beats the previous record set by Hades 2.

Hades 2 had reached a peak of 112947 concurrent players. At the time, that was seen as a huge achievement for the genre. Now Mewgenics has taken that top spot.

The game is developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel. It had a long and complicated development journey. It was first announced more than 10 years ago. Over time, the project changed direction several times before becoming the turn based tactical roguelike players see today.

Mewgenics Steam player count record

According to Steam data, Mewgenics passed 115000 players at peak. That makes it the highest concurrent player count ever recorded for a roguelike on the platform.

Breaking 100000 concurrent players is rare for this genre. Roguelikes have traditionally been more niche compared to shooters or battle royale games. This milestone shows how much the genre has grown in popularity.

The strong launch suggests high wishlist numbers and strong community interest before release. Many fans of McMillen’s earlier work, especially The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, likely jumped in on day one.

It is important to note that concurrent players measure how many people are playing at the same time. It does not directly show total sales. Still, reaching such a high peak usually means strong early sales performance.

Mewgenics gameplay and roguelike growth

Mewgenics stands out because of its unique concept. The game focuses on breeding genetically distinct cats and sending them into tactical grid based battles. Each cat has different traits and abilities shaped by its genetic system.

This deep design adds replay value. Players can experiment with different builds and strategies. That depth seems to have attracted both longtime roguelike fans and new players curious about the unusual theme.

Over the past decade, roguelikes and roguelites have grown steadily. Games in the genre now mix procedural generation, progression systems, and varied combat styles. Mewgenics fits right into this evolution while offering something different.

It remains to be seen whether Mewgenics can maintain long term player retention. Ongoing updates and balance changes will likely play a big role. For now, the game holds the record as Steam’s most played roguelike by peak concurrent players. That alone marks a major achievement for an indie title.
