Meta Platforms Inc.’s significant investments in artificial intelligence are starting to pay off, as evidenced by the company’s impressive performance in the digital advertising market. CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the immediate benefits of AI during a recent earnings call, emphasizing its role in improving content recommendations and enhancing advertising effectiveness.
Strong Q2 Results Showcase AI’s Impact
Meta’s second-quarter revenue grew by 22% year-over-year, reaching $39.07 billion, with 98% of sales generated from advertising on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. This growth rate outpaced competitors such as Google, which reported an 11% increase in ad revenue to $64.6 billion, and smaller companies like Pinterest and Spotify, which saw revenue growth of 21% and 20%, respectively.
Meta’s CFO Susan Li noted that the advertising business benefitted from sectors like online commerce, gaming, and media and entertainment, with the Asia-Pacific region showing the strongest ad growth. Improved ad performance has also helped raise overall ad prices, despite a slowdown in regional growth.
Rebuilding Ad Infrastructure with AI
Zuckerberg pointed to the overhaul of Meta’s advertising technology stack using AI as a crucial factor in their success. The company’s ad platform faced challenges after Apple implemented an iOS privacy update in 2021, making it harder for social media platforms to target users. However, AI has enabled Meta to refresh its ad infrastructure and boost user engagement, translating into increased revenue and profits.
Mark Mahaney, an internet analyst at Evercore ISI, highlighted this transformation, noting the substantial impact of AI on Meta’s financial performance. The company’s shares rose 7% in extended trading following the positive earnings report and a favorable forecast for the current quarter.
Continued Investment in AI and the Metaverse
Meta is heavily investing in AI, including purchasing Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) essential for training AI models and handling demanding workloads. This investment is part of a broader strategy to capitalize on the future potential of generative AI, a technology popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Despite some skepticism about these expenditures, Meta’s current returns demonstrate the value of its AI initiatives.
Analysts like Angelo Zino of CFRA Research recognize Meta’s effective integration of AI across its ecosystem, noting that the company has successfully navigated past challenges and is outpacing its peers in growth rates.
Future Outlook and Long-term AI Strategy
Meta’s spending on AI and the metaverse, which continues to incur substantial losses, is set to increase. For 2024, the company raised its expected capital expenditures to between $37 billion and $40 billion, up from a previous low end of $35 billion. Li outlined a two-pronged AI strategy, with “core AI” enhancing the advertising platform and recommendation systems, while generative AI represents a longer-term investment. Although Meta does not anticipate significant revenue from generative AI in 2024, the company expects it to create new revenue opportunities in the future, ensuring a solid return on investment over time.
