Meta Platforms (META) hit a new intraday all-time high on Thursday, with shares rising as high as $577 following the unveiling of its AI advancements at the Meta Connect 2024 developer event. The stock edged slightly lower afterward, trading around $573, and was at $568.16 as of 10:35 AM, marking a 52-week high of $576.88.
During the event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased Meta’s latest AI model, Llama 3.2, and introduced its new “Orion” augmented reality glasses, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and the newest mixed-reality Quest headset. Llama 3.2, Meta’s latest open-source AI model, is capable of processing images, charts, graphs, and text, offering developers more complex application capabilities.
The AI model is said to be competitive with OpenAI’s GPT-4-mini and even outperform Google’s AI model, Gemma, by certain metrics. Additionally, Meta’s AI assistant, available across platforms like Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook, has added voice capabilities of celebrities, including Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell.
Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta has reached a pivotal point in AI development, with Llama becoming a potential industry standard, aiming to compete closely with leaders like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
