Meta Platforms, the company behind WhatsApp, has shared that it’s adding a new and easier way for people to keep their chats safe. The app will now let users protect their chat backups using their face, fingerprint, or phone screen lock instead of remembering long passwords or special security keys.
This new option is called passkey encryption. It means that your saved WhatsApp chats can now be locked and unlocked with a simple tap or glance, using the same security you already use to open your phone.
Meta reminded users that WhatsApp was actually the first private messaging app to introduce end-to-end encrypted backups more than four years ago. This new update makes that system even stronger and more convenient.
The feature will start showing up for users in the coming weeks and months. To check if it’s available, you can open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap Chats, then Chat Backup, and choose the End-to-End Encrypted Backup option.
With this change, Meta is making it clear that it wants to keep improving privacy and security across all its apps. The goal is to make sure people’s messages stay safe, private, and easy to access without any complicated steps.
