Al Pacino revealed that he found inspiration for his role as Tony Montana in the thriller movie “Scarface” by observing Meryl Streep’s performance in “Sophie’s Choice.” In an interview featured in the Blu-ray booklet for “Scarface,” Pacino expressed admiration for Streep’s work in the film and praised her commitment to portraying a character from another country and world.
Pacino said, “I was very inspired by Meryl Streep’s work in Sophie’s Choice. I thought that her way of involving herself in playing someone who is from another country and another world was particularly fine and committed and… courageous.”
“Sophie’s Choice,” released just before Pacino began filming “Scarface” in 1982, starred Meryl Streep as a Polish immigrant in America and earned her the Best Actress Oscar.
“Scarface” initially received mixed reviews but has since gained recognition as a classic and one of Pacino’s standout performances. Taking inspiration from Streep’s acclaimed work showcases the impact and influence actors can have on each other within the film industry.
