Talk about a Hollywood love story no one saw coming! Legendary stars Meryl Streep and Martin Short are reportedly more than just good friends — they’ve been quietly dating for over a year, according to RadarOnline.com.
While the two icons managed to keep their romance under wraps for quite some time, eagle-eyed fans of their Hulu series Only Murders in the Building had already been whispering about the sparks flying between them.
An insider spilled to Page Six, “Meryl couldn’t help but fall for Martin. He’s a true gentleman, he keeps her laughing, and he’s just an all-around positive, bright light. She absolutely loves being around him.” Their love story wasn’t a grand plan, either. The source added, “They weren’t actively looking for a relationship — it just happened naturally.”
Their families and close friends are reportedly all for the pairing, too. “Their kids and inner circle think they’re adorable together,” the insider shared.
Though they’ve made an effort to keep things private, fans started to catch on after spotting them holding hands at several public events last year. More recently, the couple made a few high-profile appearances on the same night — first posing with Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein backstage at the Broadway show Oh, Mary!, then later turning up together at Saturday Night Live, where they were seen warmly interacting with fans and security, per a video obtained by TMZ.
Their connection isn’t brand new — Meryl and Martin have been friends for years, with a circle of mutual friends that helped deepen their bond over time. And both stars know the highs and lows of long-term love. Meryl quietly separated from her husband of 40 years, Don Gummer, back in 2017, while Martin heartbreakingly lost his beloved wife, Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010.
Despite being blissfully happy together now, marriage doesn’t seem to be on the horizon. A source noted that Meryl remains legally married to Don Gummer, but even beyond that, neither she nor Martin feels the need to formalize their relationship. They’re perfectly content enjoying life as boyfriend and girlfriend.
