Thomas Markle, Meghan Markle’s estranged father, is reportedly struggling to adjust to his new life after relocating to Cebu Island in the Philippines earlier this year. The retired TV lighting director, who had lived for years in Rosarito, Mexico, near the US border, moved along with his son, Thomas Markle Jr., in hopes of starting fresh in a more peaceful and affordable environment. Initially staying at a 3-star hotel, Thomas Sr. later settled into a high-rise apartment that costs about USD 670 per month.
However, the transition has proven challenging. The hot, humid climate of Cebu—with temperatures ranging from 80 to 100 degrees and humidity levels reaching 90%—has taken a toll on his health. Locals describe the weather as brutal even for younger men, and Thomas has reportedly been seen using a cane to navigate the island’s uneven streets, suggesting the adjustment has been physically demanding.
Before moving, Thomas shared in an interview that he wanted a calmer life, feeling stuck and eager to experience kindness and meet new people. He spoke of Southeast Asia’s culture and beauty and emphasized that he wasn’t running away but seeking positivity. Despite the estrangement, he follows news about Meghan daily but holds no ill will toward her.
Thomas has not spoken to Meghan since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, and their relationship has deteriorated further since his stroke in 2022. He has never met his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, who recently turned four.
