No, it’s not Jackson Mahomes suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s another Mahomes sibling making football headlines this weekend.
Graham Walker, the half-brother of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is getting a shot to prove himself at the team’s rookie minicamp. While he hasn’t officially joined the team yet, Walker signed a short-term deal that lets him participate in camp with the hope of earning an invite to full training camp this summer.
So, who is Graham Walker?
Walker is the son of Patrick Mahomes Sr. (same dad as the Chiefs QB) and played college football at Brown University from 2020 to 2023. In 2024, he transferred to Rice University, where he made a big position switch, moving from wide receiver to tight end.
Despite being new to the role, Walker caught 24 passes for 252 yards while playing for the Rice Owls. He’s listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, making him a little smaller than most NFL tight ends, but he could still be a useful red-zone target thanks to his size and athleticism.
Can Graham Walker make it into the team?
It’s a long road, but not impossible. If Walker can impress the coaching staff at rookie camp, he might earn a spot at training camp, and if he continues to shine, maybe even make it onto the 53-man roster come preseason. It’d be a huge achievement and a great story for the Mahomes family.
And honestly, the Chiefs could use more depth at tight end. Star veteran Travis Kelce is still elite, but isn’t expected to stick around in the NFL for too many more seasons. So the team is quietly starting to look at potential future options at the position.
In addition to Walker, Kansas City also signed tight end Jake Bringingstool from Clemson as an undrafted free agent, so there’s competition in the mix.
As for now, Patrick Mahomes will have to wait and see which of these young tight ends could one day be his go-to target, especially in a future without Kelce.
In the bigger picture, the Chiefs are already eyeing another Super Bowl run after falling short to the Eagles this past February. Whether Graham Walker becomes a part of that journey remains to be seen, but he’s officially in the game.
