After many years of rumours and fan hopes, it’s finally happening. Matt Smith is going to be in a Star Wars movie. Yes, the same Matt Smith from Doctor Who and House of the Dragon. He has been officially cast as the villain in an upcoming film called Star Wars: Starfighter. This new movie will be directed by Shawn Levy.

The news came from a report by Deadline. Matt will star alongside Ryan Gosling, who is expected to play the main hero in the movie. Another exciting name in the cast is Mia Goth. She’s also playing a villain, so there’s a good chance we might get to see her and Matt Smith as a dark team. Maybe even a Sith duo? That would be very cool to watch, though we don’t know any details yet about their characters or if lightsabers are involved.

This isn’t the first time Matt has been linked to Star Wars. Back in 2018, Lucasfilm had cast him for The Rise of Skywalker, but that never worked out. He said the role would have been a major transformation, and some fans think he was meant to play a younger version of Emperor Palpatine. But in the end, the studio went with the original actor, Ian McDiarmid, for the whole movie. It makes sense, since if you’re going to bring back Palpatine, you might as well use the actor who made the role iconic.

Now Matt finally gets his Star Wars moment. And this time, it’s happening for real.

Filming for Star Wars: Starfighter is set to begin this fall. The movie will hit theatres on May 28, 2027. That’s a special year for Star Wars because it marks the 50th anniversary of the very first Star Wars film. To celebrate, the original movie, A New Hope, will also be re-released in theatres just weeks before Starfighter comes out.

So in 2027, fans will get both a new Star Wars adventure and a chance to relive the original classic on the big screen. That’s going to be a big year for the galaxy far, far away.
