Marvel is gearing up for its first-ever foray into an anti-hero team with “Thunderbolts,” a cinematic adaptation of the ragtag ensemble of reformed villains from the comics. Drawing inspiration from the likes of DC’s Suicide Squad, the film is set to tie together various overarching stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The ensemble cast for the Thunderbolts includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross, Geraldine Viswanathan as Erin, and Lewis Pullman as the Sentry.
The storyline and plot details are kept under wraps by Marvel, known for its adeptness at maintaining secrecy around its projects. However, there are speculations about Baron Zemo potentially playing a significant role, and General Ross might emerge as an antagonist, possibly transforming into the Red Hulk. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is also considered a potential instigator and schemer, given her role in recruiting characters in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In the comics, the Thunderbolts team was initiated by Zemo after the Avengers’ downfall, filling the power vacuum left behind. The first comic lineup included characters like Beetle, Goliath, Cyclone, Moonstone, and Songbird. While specific details about the film’s plot remain elusive, it’s expected to be a unique addition to the MCU.
Originally slated for a December 20, 2024 release, Thunderbolts faced delays due to an actors’ strike. With a new release date of July 25, 2025, it becomes the second entry in MCU’s Phase Six after May’s release of Fantastic Four. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson, the film is anticipated to captivate audiences and potentially become a low-key fan favorite. Production is set to commence in March/April 2024.
