Marvel has finally brought the long-anticipated character Mephisto into its live-action cinematic universe, marking a significant moment for fans who have waited decades for this villain’s debut. Though we nearly saw him in WandaVision, it’s the recent spin-off, Agatha All Along, that officially names him within the MCU.
A Surprising Mention in Agatha All Along
In the third episode of Agatha All Along, Jennifer Kale, played by Sasheer Zamata, casually references Mephisto while warning Joe Locke’s character about Agatha’s reputation. She hints that Agatha may have made a deal involving her son, Nicholas Scratch, and the Darkhold, implying a connection to the demon lord. While it’s a mere mention, it’s significant because it establishes Mephisto’s existence within the Agatha narrative, and by extension, the broader Earth-616 of the MCU. This brief nod has stirred excitement among viewers, reigniting speculation about the character’s future involvement.
Mephisto and WandaVision: A Missed Opportunity?
Fans had long speculated about Mephisto’s appearance in WandaVision, given his historical ties to the Scarlet Witch. However, the show ultimately focused on Agatha Harkness as the primary antagonist. With Agatha now at the forefront, Mephisto’s mention brings him back into the conversation, leading to speculation about possible connections between his character and Agatha’s son, Nicholas. Some theories suggest that Nicholas could be the child of Agatha and Mephisto, which would add another layer to the story.
Speculation or Red Herring?
While the mention of Mephisto is exciting, it could also serve as a clever red herring. With Jac Schaeffer as the creator behind both WandaVision and Agatha All Along, it’s plausible that this reference is a playful nod to fans who have been clamoring for Mephisto’s inclusion. Some viewers humorously suggested that the writers were poking fun at the endless theories surrounding the character.
For those unfamiliar, Mephisto is a formidable figure in Marvel Comics, known for his manipulative prowess and his role in many significant storylines over the past five decades. He often seeks to corrupt souls and lure them into his dimension, tricking them into believing he embodies various malevolent figures. His introduction has been eagerly awaited, especially with rumors of him appearing in upcoming projects like Ironheart, where Sacha Baron Cohen was linked to the role.
While it remains unclear how or when Mephisto will make his official appearance in the MCU, the mention in Agatha All Along may be setting the stage for his long-awaited introduction. If the show is indeed teasing a future reveal, it will certainly keep fans engaged and speculating about the character’s eventual role in the Marvel universe. However, if this was just a playful nod, fans may be left disappointed—after all, playing with fire can lead to unexpected consequences.
