The Toronto Maple Leafs are still looking to get their season back on track as the NHL trade deadline approaches. One player who could make sense for them without breaking the bank is Luke Schenn.
The 36-year-old defenseman is currently with the Winnipeg Jets. He’s slowing down, playing just under 14 minutes a night, but his strength, toughness, and leadership make him appealing to teams pushing for the playoffs. Schenn has played 18 NHL seasons and nine teams, and he’s open to returning to Toronto for a third stint.
Daily Faceoff writer Matt Larkin ranks Schenn as a top-tier trade candidate. He points out that there’s “no such thing as too many defensemen during the playoffs,” and Schenn brings experience and a known track record.
Toronto would know exactly what they’re getting with him, especially given his history with the club. Other teams may also call the Jets, but Schenn’s familiarity with the Maple Leafs makes them a logical landing spot. If the Leafs act, they could add a proven, tough defenseman just in time for a playoff push.
